Sochi has long been a popular summer travel destination, but mainly with Russians. While the region receives over 4 million visitors each year, only 3% are from abroad. The recent Winter Olympics have now put Sochi on the international radar, and that could result in a rise in tourism; the city is certainly prepared for it.
Hosting the Olympics meant that Sochi had to grow rather quickly. The city’s rapid expansion included over 2700 new hotel rooms, 567 kilometers of new roads, as well as countless restaurants, boutiques, and cafes springing up around town.
Now it remains to be seen whether the ‘Pearl of the Black Sea’ will take centre stage as a destination for international travellers.
